What is Taekwon-Do and what are the different belts?

WHAT IS TAEKWON-DO?

Taekwon-Do is a Korean Martial Art consisting of different punching and kicking techniques, specialising in head-height kicks, jumping spinning kicks and fast kicking techniques.

The modern form of Taekwon-Do was not agreed until 1955, however the sport has been around for more than 2,000 years.

The name Taekwon-Do literally translates as ‘The Art of Foot and Hand’.

‘Tae’ means jumping, flying and kicking with the foot.

‘Kwon’ means to punch or destroy with the fist or hand.

‘Do’ means way of life or the Art.

WHAT IS HAPKIDO?

Hapkido is a hybrid Korean martial art. It is a form of self-defense that employs joint locks, grappling, throwing techniques, kicks, punches, and other striking attacks.

Hapkido was formed in the 1950s by Choi Yong-Sool.

The name Hapkido literally translates as ‘The Way Of Coordinated Energy’.

‘Hap’ means unity.

‘Ki’ signifies power and energy.

‘Do’ means way of life or the Art.

WHAT ARE THE BELT COLOURS?

WHITE

Signifies Innocence, that student has no previous knowledge of      Taekwon-Do.

YELLOW

Signifies Earth, from which a plant sprouts and takes root as a    Taekwon-Do foundation is being laid.

GREEN

Signifies the pants growth as Taekwon-Do skills begin to develop.

BLUE

Heaven, towards which the plant matures into a towering tree as training in Taekwon-Do progresses.

RED

Signifies danger, cautioning the student to exercise control and warning the opponent to stay way.

BLACK

Black belt is opposite to white belt, therefore signify maturity and proficiency in Taekwon-Do. It’s also indicating the wearers imperviousness to darkness and fear.
